Stockholm

Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is set across 14 islands connected by over 50 bridges, right where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. It’s home to about 1 million people, and with its charm, it draws around 10 million tourists annually.

The city enjoys a cool climate with an average temperature around 7°C (45°F) throughout the year, so pack layers no matter when you visit.

Stockholm’s a top spot for its mix of historic sites, modern design, and stunning waterways. It’s a perfect blend of the old and the new, making it a must-see.

The best time to experience all this is during the summer months when the days are long and the city is buzzing with outdoor events and activities.

Arriving to Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden’s capital, is a fantastic city to explore. Getting there is pretty straightforward: you can fly into Stockholm Arlanda Airport, which is about 40 minutes from the city center by train. If you’re coming from nearby countries, there are also bus and ferry options, which can be a scenic way to start your adventure.

Once you’re in the city, you’ll want to pick a great place to stay. For a mix of culture and convenience, Södermalm is a cool, trendy neighborhood with lots of cafes and shops. Gamla Stan, the Old Town, is perfect if you love historic charm and cobblestone streets. Norrmalm offers a more modern vibe with easy access to shopping and dining.

Getting around Stockholm is a breeze. The city’s public transportation is top-notch with an extensive metro, bus, and tram network. You can also use the SL card for easy access to all these modes of transport. Biking is super popular too, with bike lanes everywhere. For a more scenic route, try a ferry ride across the archipelago or along the waterways.

When it comes to food, Stockholm’s got a lot to offer. Traditional Swedish dishes include meatballs, gravlax (cured salmon), and crispbread. You’ll find cozy cafes and modern eateries serving up everything from classic Swedish fare to innovative international dishes. Don’t miss trying a cinnamon bun, which is a local favorite!

There’s so much to see and do in Stockholm. Visit the stunning Royal Palace, stroll through the historic Gamla Stan, and explore the ABBA Museum if you’re into music. The city’s museums, like the Vasa Museum with its 17th-century ship, and Skansen, an open-air museum with historical buildings and animals, are great for getting to know Swedish culture and history.

For a memorable experience, consider a boat tour around the archipelago to see the beautiful islands and waterfronts. You can also explore Stockholm’s many parks, like Djurgården, or take a walk along Strandvägen for fantastic views of the water and the city skyline.

In the summer, Stockholm is at its best with long, sunny days and a lively atmosphere, making it the ideal time to soak in all the city has to offer.

Tips to visit Stockholm

Stockholm, where the locals are known as Stockholmska, is a city with its own cool quirks. When you meet someone, a casual “hej” (hey) is the go-to greeting. Most folks speak Swedish, but you’ll also hear English, especially in tourist spots.

Eating times are pretty standard here: breakfast around 7-9 AM, lunch from 11:30 AM-1 PM, and dinner usually from 6-8 PM. Business hours typically run from 9 AM to 5 PM, with some shops open longer. Tipping isn’t necessary, but if you want to leave a little extra, 5-10% is a nice touch.

Swedes have a public health system that covers most needs, so healthcare is pretty accessible. Dress code is casual, but stylish. Typical expressions include “lagom,” meaning just the right amount, and “fika,” which is all about taking a coffee break.
