Tips to visit Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, where locals are known as “playenses,” has its own cool vibe. When you meet someone, a simple “Hola” or “¿Cómo estás?” works great.

Spanish is the main language, but you’ll also hear English and some other languages, especially in tourist spots. People usually eat lunch around 1-2 PM and have dinner from 7-9 PM. Business hours are typically from 9 AM to 6 PM, Monday to Friday, with some places open on Saturdays.

Tipping is customary, and around 10-15% is appreciated. The health system includes both public and private options, with private clinics often being preferred for quicker service. Dress code is pretty casual; beachwear during the day is totally fine, but you might want to dress up a bit for the evenings. Locals often say “¡Qué padre!” to express something they find awesome or cool.
