Tips to visit Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo is a lively spot in the Dominican Republic where locals are called “Santo Domingueros.” When you meet someone, a casual “Hola” or “¿Qué tal?” is totally the way to go.
Spanish is the main language, but you’ll also hear some English, especially in touristy areas. People typically have lunch between 1 and 3 PM and dinner from 8 to 10 PM. Business hours are usually from 9 AM to 6 PM, Monday to Friday, with some shops open on Saturdays.
Tipping is pretty standard here, around 10%. The health system is a mix of public and private, with private healthcare often preferred for quicker service. Dress code is generally relaxed; you’ll see casual wear during the day and slightly dressier outfits in the evenings. Locals might say “¡Qué chévere!” to express something they find cool or nice.
